BANGLADESH CELEBRATES 100 HOURS OF ASTRONOMY

F.R. Sarker is delivering Inagural Lecture at Mohakash Bhavan on the morning of April 02, 2009

Bangladesh celebrated 100 Hours of Astronomy from 2 April to 5 April in different parts of the country in which thousands of students and general public had participated.

At Mohakash Bhavan :- Organised by Bangladesh Astronomical Society, the Inaugural Ceremony of 100 Hours of Astronomy started at 09.00 on April 2, in the Conference Room of

Mohakash Bhavan ( Space House ) at Enayetpur, a village which lies about 80 miles northwest of Dhaka. It was attended by a large number of students.

Among those who delivered their lectures were Mr. F. R. Sarker, General Secretary, Bangladesh Astronomical Society and the SPoC for IYA2009 in Bangladesh, Mr. Abdul Matin, Head Master, Enayetpur High School, Mr. Ahmed Mustafa Khan Bacchu, the Chairman

 

Students are hearing lectures at Inaugural Session of 100 Hours of Astronomy

of the Kisholoy Kindergarten, Mr. Wahiduzzaman Wahid, Pricipal, ICL School etc. The speakers explained the objectives of 100 Hours of Astronomy Cornerstone Project. At the end of the Meeting, the students visited the Space Gallery of Mohakash Bhavan where big Astronomical Images have been pasted in its walls and students were very excited to see those images.

Mohakash Bhavan in which Mr. F. R. Sarker replied various questions on Space and Astronomy. In the evening, a Sky Observation Programme was arranged but due to cloudy weather except Moon no other celestial object could be observed.

At Kashinathpur :- On April 3, there was a big Astrofest in the premises of Shaheed Nurul Hossain College, at Kashinathpur, Pabna, a village which

lies about 60 miles west of Dhaka. It was jointly organized by Bangladesh Astronomical Society, Skylark International School and Shahid Nurul Hossain College. It was inaugurated by Launching of a Water Rocket which created excitement to thousands of students coming from the local schools and colleges. Among those who delivered their lectures in the Meeting were Dr. Ali Asgar, the former Head of the Department of Physics, Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology, Dhaka, Dr.

In the evening, a Video Show was arranged on the College Ground in which lots of Space and Astronomical Videos were projected over the large screen.

A Sky Observation Camp was also arranged at the corner of College Ground and students were enthralled and excited to see the surface of the

Moon clearly through Telescope, for many, it was first time in there life.

At Enayetpur :- A meeting on the celebration of 100 Hours of Astronomy was also organized by Bangladesh Astronomical Society at Enayetpur High School on the morning of April 4. Among those who delivered their lectures in it were Mr. Abdul Matin, the Head Master of Enayetpur High School, Dr. Ali Asgar, Dr. Farida Begum, Mr. F. R. Sarker etc.

Then there was a Question-Answer Session in which students were given answers to lots of their questions on Astronomy and Space Science by Dr. Ali Asagar and F. R. Sarker.

Enayetpur. A large number of students and general public attended in it and peeped the surface of the Moon through the Telescope with great enthusiasm and excitement.

At FREPD :- On the afternoon of April 5, the Concluding Session of 100 Hours of Astronomy was held in the FREPD Auditorium, Dhaka. It was arranged by the National Committee for Celebration of IYA2009, Bangladesh.

The main topic of the Meeting was the evaluation of the outcome of the celebration of 100 Hours of Astronomy Cornerstone Project in Bangladesh and all were satisfied with the performances. Among those who

delivered their lectures were Dr. Ali Asgar, the former Head of the Department of Physics, BUET, Dhaka, Dr. Mobarak Ali Akand, former Director of Science Museum,Dhaka, Mr. Shahidur Rahman, an Amateur Astronomer, Mr. Munir Hasan, General Secretary of Bangladesh Open Source Network, and Secretary, National Committee for Celebration of IYA2009, Bangladesh and Mr. F. R. Sarker, General Secretary, Bangladesh Astronomical Society and

SPoC for IYA2009 in Bangladesh. The Meeting was followed by Video Show on the Celebration of 100 Hours of Astronomy in Bangladesh.
